Senior Gambling
Seniors are very often socially isolated due to physical restrictions or lack of social outlets. They become involved in gambling via sweepstakes companies, casino mailings, state lottery, or bingo halls. Some have limited financial resources or are looking for that big win to compensate for an ever shrinking retirement income.
Senior problem gambling can start with the loss of a loved one, loss of interest or participation in normal activities with friends and family, or simply when confronted an abundance of spare time on their hands. They may also have feelings of oppression from family and others that they need relief from. Loneliness and boredom are the two main contributing factors that drive seniors to gamble.
Senior citizens have consistently made up approximately 17% of all calls to problem gambling helplines since 1992. They will often gamble away their retirement savings, social security, and pensions at a time in their life when this money cannot be recuperated, leaving this person destitute and often suicidal.
Reasons Seniors Turn to Gambling
